In 1996, it became illegal in the United States to perform the operation commonly called "female genital mutilation" (FGM). Fortunately the AAP has reversed its stand, and retracted any support for a 'ritual nick'.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has reversed its controversial statement favoring laws that would allow pediatricians to perform a ritual “nick” to the clitoris of young girls.
